In the automotive supply chain, integration of management systems between customers
and suppliers is key. The focus is to ensure advanced product quality planning (APQP) is well
coordinated so product design and development cycles across large groups of suppliers work in
harmony. When developing vehicles or vehicle sub-assemblies, coordinating these efforts requires
management systems that work well and can easily communicate with one another.
APQP requires organizations to develop well-defined processes from evolving design concepts
through customer acceptance of production parts. As systems evolve, organizations analyze
design and production risks earlier in the design cycle to reduce development costs, ultimately
passing these cost savings to customers. Process capabilities must be analyzed and understood
with the intention of maintaining minimum industry standards and driving improvement. Processes
must be controlled using statistical methods. Measurement uncertainty must be quantified to
ensure effective process and product monitoring. Simply, the automotive industry has
established requirements for organizations in the automotive supply chain that ensure system
consistency from top to bottom. The agreed management system standard is ISO/TS 16949.
These methods and system conformity are only effectively implemented through development and
use of process-based management systems. ISO/TS 16949 used in conjunction with the reference
materials published by the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) specify the requirements
for effective automotive management systems.
At QMII, we pride ourselves in our >20 year history of helping clients develop process-based
quality management systems in the automotive industry, long before conformity and compliance
through continual process improvement became popular. This history and approach is integrated
into our training.
